OF MONTREAL

Two important events occurred during the making of White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood. I became “Simulated Reality” paranoid and I fell in LOVE.

Well a lot more happened during the process of writing and recording, but those are the two big ones. I also reached a healthy point of self-forgiveness for my failed marriage and became deeply educated in the lies of America the Great.

I feel like a switch was recently turned on in my brain and now I’m beginning to see through the lies that have been fed to me my whole life by the masters of media and by those who control and manipulate the narrative of our cultural identity and social order.

My paranoia began during the presidential election cycle and reached a dangerous peak shortly after the inauguration. In the meantime I watched and read countless works of art in a mad effort to be reminded of how many truly brilliant people there are living/struggling among us and to try to maintain a positive outlook. The works of Angela Davis, Noam Chomsky, Chris Kraus, Ta-Nehisi Coates, and the Autobiographies of Malcolm X and Mark E Smith were all great inspirations, to name a few.

Musically, I was very inspired by the extended dance mixes that people used to make for pop singles back in the ‘80s. It’s so cool how a lot of the 80’s hits had these really intricate and interesting longer versions that wouldn’t get played on the radio and could only be heard in the clubs. I used that template with these tracks, I wanted them all to feel like the extended “club edit” of album tracks.

I also decided to abandon the “live band in a room” approach that I had been using on the recent albums and work more on my own or remotely with collaborators. I used the same drum sample packs throughout because I wanted the album to have a rhythmic continuity to it. I wanted the drums to have a strong and consistent identity, similar to how Prince’s Linn Electronics LM-1 drum machine played such an important role on his classic albums. Zac Colwell also played a huge role on this album, adding saxophones and synths to most of the songs. I also got a lot of help from long time collaborators, and “of Montreal” touring members, Clayton Rychlik and JoJo Glidewell.

The two title concept came to me when I was thinking about how difficult it is to frame the message of a song with just one title, because so often the songs are about so many different subjects. ‘White Is Relic’ was inspired by James Baldwin’s writings regarding the creation and propagation of a toxic American White identity. I’ve come to learn how it’s just a tool wielded by the 1% to give poor white people a false sense of superiority in an effort to keep the masses placated and numb to how deeply we’re all getting fucked by our capitalist rulers.

An ‘Irrealis Mood’ is a linguistic indicator that something isn’t yet reality but does have the potential to become so. I’m always searching for new identities so this concept of the death of “Whiteness” appeals to me greatly. Might be the only way to save the world.

ALEX SHILLO

Alex Shillo might have been raised in Manchester, CT, but the young singer-songwriter is as worldly as the most. His Dad’s influence, and his hero Bruce Springsteen shows in his eclectic brand of Rock/Country music.

Despite his young age, the multi-instrumentalist has experienced a lot of life. Alex spent a lot of his life on the CT Shorline, cut his teeth as a touring musician with his Dad’s band Silverado. Carl Shillo, founder/leader/singer/songwriter of the band SILVERADO. In the late 70’s and early 80’s Silverado were signed to RCA records, had songs on the Billboard charts, toured the world with Steppenwolf and a bunch others.

Plus, when Silverado (With Alex on Rhythm Guitar and support Vocals) decided to recently tour again up and down the East Coast opening for major acts like Big & Rich, Eric Church, Parmalee, and many others with Silverado, he rose to that challenge as well.

BOB SAGET

Yes, Bob Saget has starred in many successful television shows, including two of the most family-friendly shows network TV has ever produced (Full House and Americas Funniest Home Videos) but he’s also an out of his mind, Grammy-nominated standup comedian for over thirty years. From his HBO special That Ain’t Right to his scene-stealing cameos in Entourage and The Aristocrats, it’s always effective as Saget embraces his dark side.

From directing MGM’s cult favorite feature film Dirty Work, to directing and producing the highly acclaimed ABC television movie, For Hope, to starring in the critically acclaimed, Paul Weitz off-Broadway play, Privilege, to starring on Broadway in the Tony Award winning The Drowsy Chaperone, Bob Saget shows no signs of stopping. Ever.

In 2007 came the hugely successful DVD release of Farce of the Penguins, an R-rated comedy/documentary/love story, that he voiced-over, wrote, directed, and produced, with producer David Permut. And then came the hit NBC quiz show 1 VS 100, where Bob ad-libbed his way through the one-hour prime time format. In 2008, The Comedy Central Roast of Bob Saget premiered to the second highest ratings of all TV that night, second only to the Olympics. And in 2009 Bob’s sitcom, Surviving Suburbia aired on ABC.

For many years now, Bob has been a proud board member of the Scleroderma Research Foundation. He co-produces and hosts Cool Comedy Hot Cuisine fundraising events in Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco. To date, they have raised over 30 million dollars for the SRF.

Bob was seen reprising the role of “Himself” on HBO’s hit series Entourage and he starred in his own documentary comedy series for A&E titled Strange Days with Bob Saget, an exploration of unusual subcultures in America.

In May, Bob completed his first Australian theater tour visiting Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.  Bob continues touring, playing to sold out audiences in theaters and universities across North America and in 2012 he hosted the Montreal Comedy Festival’s first live 90 minute JFL XXX TV show which continues to air across Canada on The Movie Network.

His 2013 one-hour stand-up special, That’s What I’m Talkin’ About, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album. The special was filmed at The Moore Theatre in Seattle, premiered on Showtime in May 2013 and is now available as a CD, DVD and download, and on Netflix.

Bob’s first book is a New York Times Best Seller – DIRTY DADDY: The Chronicles of a Family Man Turned Filthy Comedian was released on April 8, 2014 to critical acclaim with Vanity Fair calling it, “Hilarious and at times heartbreaking.”  The book is published by It Books, an imprint of HarperCollins and is available everywhere in hardcover or iBook or Kindle, as an audio book either on CD or download, recorded by Bob himself.  Dirty Daddy was released in paperback on October 28.
